Q. My windows xp laptop randomly crashes after a single beep, and the mouse freezes?
this started ever since there was a big crash. from now on, the computer runs like normal, but after a while everything crashes and you can still move the cursor - but then a loud beep (coming from the laptop not speakers) sounds and the cursor freezes too. then the only thing to do is turn it off, because nothing works. help would be much appreciated... thanks in advance...

back-up your files reformat your computer this is the easiest way (and how people from pcworld or w/e fix the computers)

Q. My hp windows xp laptop is making a loud buzzing noise..coming from the fan area, whats wrong with it?
when i turn it on, the fan starts and it makes a buzzing noise. if i apply slight preassure to that area the fan stops completely and the buzzing stops. i have it on for not even 10 minutes and its really hot..like burning hot. is there anything i can do, or anyone know why its doing that. i have had it for 2 years and it has crashed 4 times..its not worth much to me, im not willing to speand alot on it to have it fixed...

The fan might be loose or have something lodged in it. I doubt it would be dust but you could try opening it and cleaning the heat sink and fan. The heat sounds like it would be dust though. But then again if you have a cheap processor you would get lots of heat because it has to work harder. Buy a air blower cans and clean out the vents and stuff.

Q. How can i make my laptop louder while watching a dvd movie?
when i am watching a dvd on my notebook, i can barely hear conversation in the movie. i've tried using several players with the volume at max level on the player and windows xp as well. the volume level is great when listening to anything else, just a problem when watching dvds.

"Then i would recommend looking in the laptop manual for a physical volume control..."

Is the dvd store bought or boot leg? Not trying to be funny but some times boot leg movies don't really give the best audio playback. If it is store bought, then I would recommend looking in the laptop manual for a physical volume control on the laptop. Maybe a fn key combo, or a switch on the side of the computer.

Q. What is wrong with my laptop speakers?
i have an acer aspire 4710z. it came with a linux operationg system but instead i installed a windows xp operating system. i already adjusted all the kinds of audio setting and its in its maximum!!!! the speakers of my laptop is dolby digital live so why does it suck?!?! my volume is soooooooo soft seriously i keep scrolling the volume to the maximum. even the volume in the control panel is in the maximum what the hell is wrong?!?! on youtube videos its so soft. sometimes the windows media player is so soft too! i know laptop speakers aren't really that loud but my cousin has the same laptop and he also made his laptop windows xp but his laptop is waaaay louder than mine!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the hell? help!!!!!! how do i fix it!?!?!?!?!?!?!

"The sound that comes from your laptop speakers is indirectly connected to your headset..."

since we cant get your laptop configuration from linux itself, do these things for me and let me know the outcome later: Hardware troubleshooting: 1. in laptops, check for other volume switches. it can be at the side or at the back areas. u may have toned in by the volume icon(s) of the audio software but maybe u left the master volume switch off on on low. 2. got a headset? try it. the sound that comes from your laptop speakers is indirectly connected to your headset.. chances are u might get a better sound with your headset, which can mean that there might be a volume switch u have not turned up on. Audio-Driver troubleshooting: 1. check the manuals and documentation on your laptop's make. you should see something there about the model of your audio card. check audio card's model and make. 2. once u get the model and make of your laptop's audio card, check the internet (preferably the brand of your laptop) and download the audio driver for that same make and model. make sure its the same make and model bcoz both hardware and software always work together. 3. assuming u get the right audio card driver for ur audio card, install it according to the directions from where u got it. upon installation, boost the volume switches (in both control panel audio settings and from the installed software of the audio card) and see what u got. of course, after you install the audio driver.. you should have found out if there are other physical volume switches so u can adjust volumes and setting there.

This answer closely relates to:
  • Windows sound louder
    • Is there any software for increasing the audio volume of your laptop?
    • How to make audio sound better on laptop?
    • How can i make my laptop onboard audio sound better?

Q. How can i make my laptop less noisy?
hi, so i have an older sony laptop that runs windows xp professional. the one thing that bothers me is that the fan is so loud. the laptop does tend to get very hot though. so is there any way i can make the fan not so loud. should i buy another one? (btw, the fan turns on, and is loud from the minute i turn on my laptop) sony vaio pcg-grz660

"Try opening the laptop and cleaning said fan..."

well, if I were you I'd get a cooling pad, they help your computer cool down, and are generally less noisy than those old computer fans ;) and if you could, try opening the laptop and cleaning said fan, its probably dusty! And dusty fans tend to make a lot of noise (Reason for that is, since dusty coolers are harder to cool off with dust, fans have to spin faster, thus making more noise).

Q. Windows xp - computer does not start properly ... shows black screen only - help!?
after i shut down my dell laptop 9300, windows xp began to install several updates. it took longer than expected and my cpu fan sounded kinda loud so i shut it off manually. when i restarted my pc again, it said that windows was not shut down properly and it now gives me 5 options: 1) safety mode 2) safety mode w/networking 3) saftey mode w/command prompt 4) last known configuration where windows worked 5) start windows normally i tried all five options ... the windows xp logo and loading bar appears, and after that a black screen with my mouse cursor displays. normally, i should see a blue background with user admins so that i can enter a password to login. but all i see is a black screen, yet my computer seems to be running. how do i correct this?

"Shut down you might have got your windows installation is corrupted..."

My Dear Friend By forced shut down you might have got your Windows installation is corrupted . Simple way is to repair the windows installation. How to do it: Start your computer go to BIOS settings, set CD Rom as first Boot Device and HDD as the secondary boot device. SAVE the Settings. Put the OS CD in drive restart the PC. Installation Tab, Press "R" to repair Windows it will take an hour or so depending on your configration.

Q. My laptop doesn't mute when i plug a headphone in the jack, just installed xp.?
i just installed windows xp on my hp dv2000 series laptop (couldn't take vista), and whenever i plug in headphones, the onboard sound doesn't mute, it just makes it loud. idk if i need a certain driver or something. help? d:

"Contacts that enable and disable the normal sound when the headphones or earbuds are..."

You plainly and simply need the jack fixed. ALL headphone jacks have a set of contacts that enable and disable the normal sound when the headphones or earbuds are put in the jack. Anyone who tells you any different hasnt a clue. I've been in the home entertainment and pc repair business for 30 plus years.
