    Q. How many cores is the ps3?

A ps3 has 8 CORE cell broadband. It means that it has Cell Broadband SPU - 8 Cores. One of the 8 cores of the ps3 is disabled as a backup. Each core works at 3.2GHz, 25.6 GHz threaded. It is a 256MB RAM system and has a blu-ray drive.

    Q. How many cores does yellow dog linux use on ps3?
does it use all 8 or 7? or does it only use 1 core. and can i host a game server like a counter strike server with it?

All linux distros use generally the power pc core and its dedicated spe slave, functioning basically like a dual-core pc. It is possible to program the other spe's into it, but we are talking open-source software here. Yellow Dog was paid by Sony to make the kernel, and they get money from scientists who buy their preloaded clusters. They probably have some applications designed for those guys to use the full force of the Cell for their science stuff. But that's not gonna affect the vast majority of linux applications, and pretty much all distros see just 2 cores there most of the time. That's because most of the existing linux applications, including things like Firefox, Mplayer, ffmpeg, vlc, and most of the other stuff you use was designed and compiled for using on pc-type architectures, that is, single, dual, maybe quad-core. Single or divisible-by-two architectures. The Cell is so radically different that most stuff just hasn't been recompiled to use all the spe's, nor would most stuff need to be to run well. Considering the gpu is locked under linux, the only reason you'll need the other spe's is for special applications like what those ydl science custies do. I know there are some instructions for using more spe's, and some people have used them to try to make up for the lack of a gpu, among other things. I have used my ps3 to make gameplay videos of what's on my pc, and it almost works for 3d games, not quite... I wouldn't mind seeing if adding a couple of spe's to the equation would make it work better. But that would take a lot of coding on my part, and I don't know how to write code for the spe's. As for hosting a server... it depends on whether the server is using the gpu or not, and how much memory it demands. Obviously only dedicated would work; if the dedicated server uses less than 200mb of RAM, it would probably work very well. Keep in mind there has to be a linux version of the server, because Wine doesn't work on ps3, or on any other powerpc board - yet. I await the day that it does.

    Q. How many cores of the six cores in the cell processor of the ps3 are used in mgs4?
and gta? i heard killzone will use 4 and a half it has 8 but it utilizing seven of the eight the eighth spe is disabled to improve chip yields (i.e. chips do not have to be discarded if one of the spes is defective.) only six of the seven spes are accessible to developers as one is reserved by the os source is wikipedia so games can only use 6

Not sure but the PS3 has 8 cores

    Q. How powerful of a computer would be required to emulate a ps3 at full speed?
i know that pcsx2 can't even run 100% stable at full speed for all ps2 games, but i'm just curious; just how powerful does computer hardware need to be to emulate the ps3? 16-core processors clocked at 4.0ghz? what kind of hardware would we need?

Okay now, let's see. Playstation emulation is illegal, you know. But here goes. The PS3 has a single 3.2ghz core, which is equivalent to the last gen Pentium 4, but you could emulate this with a high-clocked Intel E8600, which is dual core and stock clocked at 3.33ghz. The RSX graphics running at 550mhz is equivalent to the last generation nVidia 7800GTX or 7900GTX, so you could simulate that with any graphics card around the 8800GT, 8800GTS, or the 9 series, e.g. 9800GT, 9600GT, 9800GTX, etc. ATI's 4850 and 4870 would work. Hope this helps Hongye

    Q. Is the newest 80gb ps3 core system backwards compatible with ps2 games?
the newest $400 dollar model (system without games) - can i play ps2 games on it?

There are four models of the PS3 that are capable of playing PS2 games. All of them have been discontinued. The 80GB and 160GB models in stores currently do not have the capability of playing PS2 games. The NTSC 20GB plays PS2 games via Hardware (Emotion Engine). The Emotion Engine is a CPU developed and manufactured by Sony Computer Entertainment and Toshiba for use in the Sony PlayStation 2 video game console. It was released in Japan and North America. It has been discontinued. The NTSC 60GB (best model) plays PS2 games via Hardware (Emotion Engine). This model of the PS3 was also released in Japan and North America and has been discontinued. The PAL 60GB model plays PS2 games via Software (Emulation) hence the level of compatibility was reduced. It was released in the Europe/PAL region. This model has been discontinued. It excludes the PlayStation 2 "Emotion Engine" CPU chip. However, it still keeps the "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU. The latest PS3 to provide PS2 compatibility was the old 80GB model via Software (Emulation). It was released in North America and Korea. Like the previous three models, it was discontinued. Good luck.

price features graphics do you really need wifi and a bigger harddrive whats the benefit of the ps3's platinum's bigger hardrive do you really need it? all i care about is gameplay and graphics not really memory.

1.) $599.99 60GB Wifi Ethernet Bluetooth 2.0 Memory stick duo/sd/compactflash slots USB 2.0 X 4 2.) $499.99 20 GB Ethernet Bluetooth 2.0 USB 2.0 X 4 Everything else is the same. If all you care about is gameplay and graphics, go with the $499.99. 20GBs is the same as the HD for the 360.
