 Q. How to find out processor type for a computer? i have a dell inspiron and it doesn't run anymore.
how can i find out the processor type for it?
i think i need to get a new cord, but the laptop doesn't come on.
is there a way i can find this out when it isn't on?
"Way to find out what kind of processor you have inside is to check..."
Since your laptop does not power up anymore, the only way to find out what kind of processor you have inside is to check the Original System Configuration page at Dell's support site.
Go to Dell's Support site (Link below) and choose Home User support section.
From here Click on "Product Support Troubleshooting".
At this point the web site will ask you to enter your laptops "Service Tag", the Service Tag is a 7 digit alphanumeric code on the bottom of you laptop that should end with a "1".
From this point, Click on "System Configuration Information" and then on the next screen, Click on the "Original System Configuration" tab.
This will bring up the list of parts that were included with your laptop. All you have to do is read down the look for a line with the word "Processor" in it.
To find out if you need a new cord, check the cord for frays and damage around the plugs. Currently this would be the only way to verify if it is bad or not.

 Q. How do i find my processor slot type? i just got a new mother board for my other computer but it didn't come with any spec sheet or anything just the board. so how do i find the slot type (773, am2 etc.)?
Okay. Does the board come with a name/serial number? Try typing that into google to see what you get.
Other than that you probably have to use pictures. Your new motherboard socket is most likely one of these four.
Socket 775(Intel)

Socket AM2/AM2+(AMD)

Socket 939(AMD, extremely similar to AM2 but not compatible)

 Q. How do i find out my power supply level and processor type? i need to know what wattage my current power supply outputs and whether my processor is dual-core or core 2 duo.
dxdiag doesn't seem to tell me that.
well as for you cpu the best program to get is CPZ this will give a lot of info about your cpu and other hardware totally free program
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
as for your power supply unit this is more tricky, becuase no program will tell you.. if this is a branded machine then you would just look up the technical details on their webiste, or you would need to open the casing and look on the psu sticker.

 Q. How can i find out what type of slot i have for my processor? does it even matter what kind i have, can any processor just fit in my comp?
"You can't just fit any processor in your computer because cpu's have..."
Yes, it matters. Knowing the slot type or "package" of your CPU is one important factor in identifying what type of motherboard you'll buy, and vice versa. You can't just fit any processor in your computer because CPU's have different brands and models. Intel Core 2 Duo is different from Intel Pentium D 805. AMD Athlon XP is different from AMD Athlon 64 FX or AMD Athlon 64 X2. I'm sure you understand what I mean.
If you have Windows installed, you can download a FREE program called CPU-Z from www.cpuid.com. The program will not just tell what you have, it will also tell the Name of the processor, the volage, the core speed, multiplier, bus speed, and many more. Add to that, it will also tell what kind of motherboard you have and the memory modules installed on it.
