Q. Will a dual core server processor work in a desktop computer?
i am looking to upgrading my desktop's processor. i found this dual core "server" processor that i would like to use (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=n82e16819105222). will this processor work in a desktop computer, or do i need one that is for a desktop?

"If your running a server and looking for a server processor..."

the server processors are made specically for SERVERS. say like intel xeon or amd opteron. tyose are server prcosseros made for servers and are good for nothing else. if your running a server and looking for a server processor, get either xeon or opteron. (depends on what your motehrboard can handle). if your gonna go for daily use and maybe some gaming, get a dual core. intel dual core e8400 is good enough. check your motherboard online and see what prcoessors are compatible with it. if it uses INTEL and u try to use AMD, your gonna bust up ure PC.

Q. Can i use my dell server with xeon 2.5ghz quad cores and raid hardisk as a pc? ? and install windows xp on it?
hi all i have a new dell 1950 u1 server with 2 quad xeon cores each 2.5ghz speed, 4gb ram and 2 raid 160gb hardisk its really fast, but can i use it as a pc ?? can i install windows xp on it ? games ? office ? and other stuff is it recommended and why i simply don't need it anymore as a server, so would love to take advantage from using it as a pc ... thanks all

"Just absolutely terrible for anything other than running a server console..."

I have several Dell 1950s and I can tell you from experience they make horrible "desktop" systems. You have a lot of CPU power in there; however you have virtually no video capacity. The onboard video is typically an ATI Radeon with no dedicated GPU and 8mb of RAM. Furthermore, it's a 1x AGP bus if I recall. Just absolutely terrible for anything other than running a server console. You're also going to have a problem with drivers. The Intel chipsets used are specifically made for server systems and, to my knowledge, neither Dell nor Intel provides XP drivers. However, I'm sure you can track down drivers that are equivalent on the desktop side and work. If you really want to make this work then you could purchase a PCI Express video card and put it into one of the two available expansion slots assuming you got the model that has expansion slots available. Then you'd have to spend the time hunting down drivers or modifying the INF files of the ones Dell provides to install on XP. Many server drivers work fine in XP if you mess with the INFs. Bottom line, unless you want to put in some time and money this simply isn't worth it. On the other hand if it's just going to go to waste then by all means; rock on.

Q. How to install a server into computer?
hello. i want to reinstall server core r2 into a computer... my current computer's server is another server but i want to install the server core into it.. i have a cd, so how do i go about doing that? just insert into the cd into the cd drive then? sorry to ask such a stupid question, but i really don't know. thanks so it means i put the cd into the cd drive before i switch on the computer or i could just start the computer first then put the cd?

Just put the CD in the drive and restart Windows. Or put the CD in the drive when the computer is off, then turn it on. Either way does the same thing.

I'm assuming Fedora is using Squid as the proxy server. Here's a link to information on authentication and squid. http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2001/08/09/authen_squid.html

Q. If i install apache server on fedora core how much security stuff do i have to do?
i would like to run my own web server but i don't want to deal with being hacked all the time. i know linux is significantly more stable than ms security wise, but still...how much security stuff do i have to do in order to secure my server? thanks

If you install BIND and/or HTTPD (apache) on fedora, you shouldn't have any problems even with the default configuration. Depending on how and where you install your default index.htm(l). The one thing you might want to look into, if you are into security.....create symbolic links to your web-pages in "chroot". chroot will basically put symbolic links into the directory where your web-pages are located, instead of putting the actual web-site into said directory. This will give an added layer of security to your website.
