I just watched a DVD for the first time on my Acer 5570Z, and the volume was much lower than on my previous laptop. However, I found a way to boost it noticeably in Vista (may work in xp if you can find it). - Right click the speaker icon in the task bar (or choose Control Panel : Sound). - Select Playback Tab : Speakers : Properties. - Select Enhancements Tab. - Check the Loudness Equalization box and click apply. Volume should now be substantially louder. Modifying Equalizer and Environment settings may also provide a boost.

I tried loudness equalization and it made it worse, it was about 50% quieter :-(

Q. How do you boost regular speakers to play from a laptop?
i am having a birthday party at the park and i need to know how to hook up a set of speakers to a laptop audio jack and boost the sound. i saw a guy at the swap meet with a disc man and a huge box speaker playing music but i don't remember how he had it hooked up.

Q. Sound booster for my laptop?
ok this is a weird problem my laptop speakers produce very low sound. so low that you have to lean up against it to hear it when it's on full blast. the thing is that about a week ago, i reinstalled xp and the sound didn't work at all. then one day, i installed bicro vista transformer. it's this thing that makes xp look like vista. and boom there gos my sound it's back again. but it's really low is there any software that i can use to boost my sound i tried external speakers, it's still low. the speakers are altec lansing thanks i already checked all the settings and thye sound driver is the newest i can get. i have a guitar amp and it does make my sound louder, but it sounds bad and i don't want to carry amp around i know something is wrong with my laptop. i'll try and see if i can get another sound driver thanx

my problem is these awful, terrible hp laptop speakers. i know i was warned about this when i read reviews on this thing, but i didn't think it was gonna be this bad! the computer is brand new, about 4 days old. hp pavilion dv7-3165dx. i tried doing things to the equalizer and it didn't help at all. is there any way to make these speakers stop sounding distorted, "pixelized" or crackly? maybe even get a nice bass boost too? like can i buy some replacement speakers and install them? i don't want any external speakers, as i take this thing around my house all day. and the sound through the headphones isn't that much better! strangely enough, the mute button just suddenly stopped working, it used to turn red when muted but now it doesn't! i know laptop speakers aren't supposed to be amazingly great and all, but i just don't want this gross low quality crackling and "pixely" sound coming from them! please help! well i just tried to update the audio driver and it said it was the latest version...ugh. and lmao to the guy who said he hated this comp!! it's not bad, it just has crappy sound for an entertainment laptop!! ugh...why isn't my mute button showing red when i mute the sound?!! arrrghh the computer's only a baby and already has problems!!! >=[ i got it on like the 18th >=( so it's not even a week old and already being bad! should i really take it back and get a replacement or something at best buy?

You say that you know all about the volume control, but do you check the play options AND the record options under the volume control? What about the laptop hardware control via software. Specifically speaking, some systems come with software that is meant to be the main interface between the user and the hardware. My laptop came with Sound Manager software that gives much greater control of how my sound card operates. See if you have that type of software and if not, you can download free apps that boost the mic gain. Logitech webcams sometimes have mics built in and their software boosts the mic. Goldwave is a free to try app which will boost the mic gain. Or just keep it simple and get a mic that comes with it's own boost from Radio Shack for about $20.

i have just bought advent ade-210c 2.1 computer speakers for £35, for a reasonably expensive set as these you would expect a decent sound output, quite clear, but at full volume (speakers and windows - im not that dumb!) they really aren't that loud, is it the speakers that are the problem, or the sound card? i have realtek hd audio alc268 and someone told me a sound card would make it significantly louder, but as i have a laptop i would need an experesscard54 sound card, and the cheapest one of these i found was for £50! and i don't know if this is justified, advice would be appreciated muchly! i have an acer travelmate 5520g running vista home premium, i think the other specs are irrelevant but will post if needed!

hi mate i have to agree with peter,although your soundcard is responsible for your audiop production your speakers are what produces the audio sound and if your using a pair of 2.1 speakers they are not gonna be the best sound around the realtek sound onboard sound devices are probally the best intergrated audio systems avavlible and connected to a decent 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system you should get a excellent sound reproduction the CREATIVE LABS Speaker GigaWorks Pro Gamer G500 from http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=136581&CatId=0 are a excellent speaker system and producing a whopping 310 Watts RMS of power,this is more than enough for any p.c set up for a more inexpensive speaker system then the Sony 5.1 Speaker System from http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=295950&CatId=0 is a excellent product,and although much cheaper than the gigaworks speakers this still pushes out 50watts r.m.s power,and this is more the level ideal for a home enviroment hope this helps good luck mate !

There's so many options this is a difficult question to answer. "Computer" speakers are available in a number of varieties. You'll probably want to go with a subwoofer-satellite system where there's a single subwoofer for the bass and a left and right speaker (or even 4 or 5 speakers for surround) that produce the rest of the sound. They are made with the mini-plug connector(s) for a computer and some have USB for software control of features. Klipsch and Altec are very good. You could take computer or iPod audio and feed it into any typical home stereo system too. You only need the correct cable. So the sky is the limit, top end hi-fi, cheap and dirty, whatever. Speakers can be as big or small as you see fit. A yard sale old stereo might work out great, seriously. The thing to do is decide if you want or need a home theater system, or just stereo - computer only or radio and DVD player and whatever else - a subwoofer and smaller speakers or no sub and bigger speakers? Just how loud is loud enough? 10 Watts? 10,000 Watts? Then go to the store and shop around a bit. Ask the geek some questions, listen to the systems, compare prices. Examples, my home studio has a high performance sound card fed into a mixing board, monitor speakers, broadcast headphones, and a signal over to a Harman Kardon digital path home theater receiver. Another computer has little 2 inch desktop speakers, they make sound, and that's about it. Another computer is fed into a Philips "home theater in a box" compact system, two main speakers and a subwoofer. It's quite impressive for what it is, and it only produces a few Watts of sound power, maybe 10 Watts full blast, plenty for a small area party.

i.ve got a linux and its got a internal mic and webcam with it. i dont know why but i cant make video calls on msn and when i record a video on the webcam it doesnt have any sound either. when i click on the speaker thing at the bottom right corner for the sound/volume setting on the recording tab i put the mic boost - all the way up and the mic capture all the way up too. can sumone help me get sound on recordings and help make video calls?

I don't really know how to fix it. I have never tried to get a webcam to work with Linux. I would suggest that you try several different sound programs load up synaptic and install gamix or gnome-alsamixer. Try them. I would advise that you sign up to the ubuntu forums. Yeah sometimes this is a big problem THIS IS HOW TO FIX IT Right click on the sound icon near the time on your start bar and press "Adjust audio properties". Under "Device volume" press ADVANCED. Now move the WAVE bar to the top as well as PC SPEAKER. If the sliders stated are not there, then press "Options" in the drop down list and press properties.
