First thing how you can tell is just watch at your puppy and if he scratches than you can be sure that he has fleas and than you should get for him some antifleas medication. But don`t wait till he scratches just go to the drugstore and ask for the appropriate medication for puppies and there they can tell you anything you want to know. Most puppies with a little hair on him you can just look at his skin and you will see if he has some liitle black creatures or not. Caroll Abbot

Yes, you should treat him anyway. Pet store products can certainly hurt you dog and better yet, they don't work. So stay away! Veterinary products work and are safe - get some Frontline. our new puppy is covered with fleas. a regular puppy flea bath killed some of them, but we still see them crawling on her. i did a google search for puppy fleas and was surprised to see many articles about dawn dish soap being very effective for killing fleas quickly. i am wondering which dawn to buy?

We used the regular blue one. It worked well. You will need to vacuum well and treat with front-line plus. If it is still warm outside where you are you need to treat the grass with a incest killer.

my puppy has fleas pretty bad. he has been digging & his skin has scabs on it. i heard that you can use lemon juice or lemons to kill fleas. i know they make a pill, shampoo, & flea treatments for that too i just don't have the money to buy those right now. do you all know anything that i can do for him & his flea problem other than getting the flea pill or treatment and flea shampoo?

If it doesn't seem to be working go buy another brand. There are many good brands out there. Most things will work, just make sure that it is a shampoo that will not dry out his skin.

Sounds exactly like fleas. As people have said, groom the dog over some wet paper and look for black specks (flea dirts) falling on the paper and dissolving into a red stain. Also check the hair in the comb - any black specks/flakes there? Any flea preparation from a vet is the best to use, particularly Frontline. As your dog has fleas, they will be in the environment too as the eggs will have dropped off and hatched in the carpet. If you use regular Frontline religiously the fleas will eventually go, but it will take a long time as they have to bite the animal to die and new ones will be hatching all the time. It would be quicker to get a house spray (again, from the vets). After you've rid the house and the animal from fleas, use of Frontline Plus drops will keep both flea-free. Yes GSDs can be prone to skin problems, but I think this case is fleas. Don't be tempted to waste money on cheaper products from shops like shampoos and collars - you'll end up spending more money trying to find one that works! Chalice

You have to be very careful treating such a young puppy for fleas, you can do untold damage if you use the wrong or too stronger stuff. If you can not get to your vet, can you not ring him and ask his advice? If he is a true animal lover - I am think he will give you some tips.

They say that insecticides are too harsh for puppies less than 6 weeks old, but yours are a week older than that. But, I still think it's a bit too young, they are still with their mommy, right? Does mommy have fleas, too? You need to get her, and any other dog or cat in your home first, with the usual flea shampoos, and invest in a good flea repellant (I just started using Advantage on my dog, and his fleas cleared up very quickly). Dawn is well known as being THE ONE liquid soap that's gentle enough to be safe to wash animals. That's why they use it to remove oil slicks from animals coated by oil spills in the ocean. I use a drop or two of Dawn in water to drown ticks I remove from the dogs and it works great. It is fine to soap down any pup or kitten with Dawn and leave it on for 2 or 3 minutes to kill the fleas. Then rinse the dog or cat thoroughly. Anti-bacterial liquids could be hard on the skin, so ask your vet before trying them. Do NOT use any dish soap OTHER than Dawn ! It's inexpensive. If you don't have it on hand, BUY some !!! -!-

my puppy has fleas. will the teatree shampoo get rid of them? i dont want to use a harsh chemical shampoo. anybody had good results from teatree?

No, I wouldn't. Go to the vet. and get Advantage or Frontline for puppies. It kills the fleas, eggs and larvae. Whereas shampoo only puts the fleas off. Once the shampoo smell is gone, the fleas will be back.
